Chelsea Flower Show

We’ve never designed or built a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. We made the decision not to build gardens for Chelsea many years ago. This is due to the amount of stress a project of this nature can create, especially at this time of year when business is already booming as Spring turns in Summer.

We’ve always enjoyed visiting the show and made the trip down to Chelsea this Saturday.

The construction of a show garden is an intense process with many man hours spent building them in the leading weeks to the show. Sadly, the gardens are only temporary, having been designed to last for the few days of the show – although some are rebuilt elsewhere. We find it incredibly sad with all of the hard work that they’re just taken down and removed.

This year, M and G Garden won best of the show – but we think Chris Beardshaws Morgan Stanley Garden should have won (shh!). The theme this year centred around water… something the VDBH team know a thing or two about!

People always ask if Chelsea gives us inspiration for future garden designs and projects. During our visit this year there wasn’t anything new that we haven’t offered clients in the past in one form or another – whether it is a garden room, paving scheme or water feature.

The planting this year was very natural, with wildflowers taking centre stage. We think this is extremely important for the future of our planet, considering gardens are important microcosms of ecology (save the bees!). This wild feeling reminded us a lot of the gorgeous local East Anglian countryside – how lucky we are!
